I believe it's for fear of actually burning the animal. Also if you put anything on the tick you'll kill it, but it won't come out! First, it's a good idea to put gloves on, ticks can transmit diseases. Then get a set of tweezers, and pull out straight, but do it gently, you don't want to get pieces of the tick and leave some in. Then disinfect the dog's skin. Betadine or whatever you have handy.
